I’m honored to share that my photograph “Footprints on a Sandy Beach Disappear: But Memories and Photos Won’t” is now on display in Venice as part of STATIC CINEMA, presented by Art-Icon.
This photograph has long held a special meaning for me. A footprint in the sand is temporary. The tide, wind, and passage of time will eventually erase it. But the experience that created it can remain—in our memories and, sometimes, in a photograph.
That idea lies at the heart of why I photograph.
A photograph freezes something that otherwise would disappear: a place, a person, a journey, a fraction of a second. And years later, that single frame can return us to the moment.
It seems particularly fitting that this image was selected for STATIC CINEMA, an exhibition exploring the relationship between photography and cinema, and what happens when movement, time, and experience are reduced to a single frame.
I’m grateful to Art-Icon for including my work in this exhibition in Venice.

**Three musk ox. One photograph. Three perspectives.**
Sometimes wildlife photography is as much about **distance and scale** as it is about getting close.

Three musk ox make their way across the rugged slopes of **Musk Ox Fjord in Northeast Greenland National Park**. They were approximately **500 yards away**, and this is the original composition—the animals almost disappearing into the immense Arctic landscape.

📷 **Photo 2 — A Closer Look**
Cropping the original by roughly half changes the story. The three musk ox become much more apparent, and the natural contours of the ravine lead the eye from one animal to the next. Even with this substantial crop, the resolution remaining from the Sony A1 II file is sufficient for a **fine-art print**.

📷 **Photo 3 — The Reveal**
Now I`ve pushed the crop much further, isolating the lowest musk ox and revealing its massive coat, face and sweeping horns. It works beautifully for a digital presentation like this, but I`ve reached the point where preparing it as a larger fine-art print would require additional processing and careful evaluation of the remaining detail.
All three images came from **a single photograph**, made from aboard the *National Geographic Endurance* while sitting in the calm waters of Musk Ox Fjord.
I was shooting **handheld with a Sony A1 II and Sony 400mm f/2.8**, using the ship`s railing for some added stabilization.

**Into the Wild — Northeast Greenland National Park 🇬🇱**
There are places that make you realize just how small we are.
Deep within **Northeast Greenland National Park**, the world’s largest national park, nearly one million square kilometers of High Arctic wilderness remain largely untouched.
These three photographs capture different sides of that wilderness.
At **Waltershausen Glacier**, the *National Geographic Endurance* appears almost perfectly framed through the arch of a grounded iceberg—a fleeting composition sculpted entirely by ice and circumstance.
Nearby, the glacier stretches across the fjord beneath mountains catching a brief wash of sunlight, a reminder that in the Arctic, a small break in the clouds can completely transform a landscape.
And then there is life.
A **musk ox calf** moves across the autumn tundra, surrounded by reds, golds, and browns. Musk oxen are remarkably adapted to this harsh environment and can be found throughout Northeast Greenland National Park.
**Ice. Wildlife. Wilderness.**
Three moments from a corner of the world where nature still sets all the rules.

At first, it was simply a piece of weathered wood lying on the tundra.
But on the treeless coast of East Greenland, driftwood has a story.
Much of the wood found along these shores begins its journey far away in the boreal forests of Siberia and, in some cases, North America. Trees enter rivers, reach the Arctic Ocean, and can become trapped in sea ice. From there, currents and drifting ice may carry them across the Arctic before the East Greenland Current eventually delivers them to Greenland`s coast.
Pine, larch and spruce are among the most common species researchers have identified in East Greenland driftwood.
So this photograph isn`t only about a piece of wood on a beach. It`s about movement—the connection between forests, rivers, ice and ocean across an enormous part of the planet.
I don`t know where this particular piece began its journey. That`s part of what makes it interesting.
It arrived here.

**Born from Ice — Kejser Franz Joseph Fjord, East Greenland 🇬🇱**
Drifting through Kejser Franz Joseph Fjord, ice becomes part of the landscape—sometimes sculpted into arches and towering walls, sometimes scarred with dark streaks of rock and sediment carried within the ice.
Every iceberg here began far from the sea.
Over years, layers of snowfall accumulate and compress under their own weight. The snow gradually transforms into dense glacial ice. Because it originates as snow, **glacier ice—and the icebergs that break from it—is freshwater, not frozen seawater.**
Eventually, as a glacier moves toward the fjord, enormous sections fracture and break away in a process known as **calving**. The newly formed icebergs then begin their own journeys, carried through the fjords by currents, tides and wind while being continually reshaped by melting and erosion.
The final photograph shows **Nordenskiöld Glacier**, one of the sources feeding ice into the waters of Kejser Franz Joseph Fjord. With the expedition ship positioned beneath the mountains and in front of the glacier, the immense scale of this East Greenland landscape becomes a little easier to comprehend.
What begins as snow on the Greenland landscape can spend years—or much longer—compressed within a glacier before finally returning to the sea as an iceberg.
**Snow. Glacier. Calving. Iceberg. Ocean.**
A landscape constantly creating, breaking apart and beginning again.

**Looking Back at Ittoqqortoormiit**
Sometimes nature creates its own portrait.
Off the coast of **Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland**, an enormous iceberg drifted through the deep blue water. From one angle it was simply a beautiful mass of Arctic ice. But then I noticed its profile.
Along the right edge of the iceberg, the silhouette of a **face seems to emerge from the ice—forehead, nose, lips and chin—gazing back toward the colorful houses of Ittoqqortoormiit.**
The two photographs tell the story together: first, the small village tucked beneath the mountains; then the silent figure of ice offshore, appearing almost as if it has turned for one last look at the community behind it.
Ittoqqortoormiit is one of Greenland`s most isolated communities, surrounded by a landscape where enormous icebergs are constantly reshaped by water, wind and time. ([Visit Greenland][1])
Of course, the face exists only in the imagination. But that is one of the things I love about photography—the camera records what is there, while our eyes sometimes discover something more.
**For a fleeting moment, it felt as though Greenland itself was looking back.**
